Samsung will launch a new, entry–level handset running its own Tizen smartphone operating system in the New Year.

According to reports in Korea, the company will reveal the Samsung Z1 on January 18th, offering it for sale for around £58. The phone will be marketed in emerging markets, where Samsung is fighting to gain lost ground against Chinese mobile makers such as Xiaomi.

The release date was revealed by an anonymous Samsung staffer, speaking with the Korea Economic Daily. His revelations come as a leak showed off the Samsung Z1 for the first time at an Indian retailer event.

The handset is said to tote a 4–inch, 800 x 480 screen, dual–core processor, 4GB storage and dual SIM smarts. That’s all backed up Samsung’s latest version of Tizen.

The launch is something of a surprise, as the Korean giant canned the release of its Samsung Z Tizen phone back in the summer. At the time it was thought that it had realised that its proprietary OS could not compete with the likes of Google Android and Apple iOS. The Samsung Z1 could make an appearance at next month’s CES, which takes place in Las Vegas.

However, in place of the four-inch screen that features on Apple's current-gen kit, there's a 4.5-inch Retina display that means the handset veers into phablet territory.

To make space for the larger display, which has been rumoured for some time among tech-watchers, there's also a thinner bezel around the screen.

Under the bonnet, the slimmer phone (dimensions are 130mm x 60mm x 7mm) is home to a 12-megapixel iSight camera, with a more powerful A7 processor to keep things ticking over.

As purported component leaks in recent weeks appear to indicate, Tedoradze imagines the iPhone 6 coming in a host of colour options, including white, black, grey, black, blue, purple, red, yellow, green and brown.

According to sources cited by Korean sites, the Galaxy S5 could be the first-ever handset in the line to feature an LCD panel. Samsung’s shift is purportedly to make cost savings.

The move, news of which was brought to us in the West by the Galaxy-fixated folk over at Sam Mobile and G for Games, could free up funding for extra features, with LCD screens cutting Samsung's outlay by as much as 20%.

The cheaper screen tech could clear the way for the metal shell that many industry-watchers have been lobbying Samsung to include in a Galaxy S smartphone for some time.

Although by no means badly received overall, the Galaxy S4's plastic build came in for heavy criticism and was widely unfavourably compared with the HTC One’s handsome aluminium unibody construction.

An LCD screen could also help deflect carping in recent years that AMOLED screens don’t offer the same, true-to-life colour reproduction as rival technologies.

Other mooted features for the Galaxy S5 included a Touch ID-style biometric technology, albeit using a retina-scanner, and a 20-megapixel camera.
