What are companies hiring an MBA graduate really looking for? They are certainly hoping that you are going to justify your salary - but what skills or traits do they want to see in their new MBA hire?
Some would argue that - in today's erratic business climate - companies are not always clear on what they expect from their MBA hires. The truth is: the requirements change as markets change. However, there are some skills and traits that an MBA graduate should certainly posses in order to contribute to his company in a situation that is everything but "business as usual".
The MBA graduate should be able to think critically - that is a given. While having strong analytical skills is of paramount importance, he or she is expected to be more than just a number cruncher. "People skills" are important more than ever; these would include relational skills, persuasion skills, delegation skills, and vision development.
He should also be able to deal with ambiguity and solve complex problems. Can you handle uncertainty and make business decisions based on limited or ambivalent information? Can you deal with pressure and unexpected obstacles? Today, it's all about flexibility and adaptability.
It's more than just having the right skills: the master of business administration degree, they say, represents a specific way of thinking. The holder of such a degree should be able to think strategically, while taking an analytical approach. Of course, core business skills are always going to be important.
